Garachico is a municipality and town on the northern coast of Tenerife, about 52 km West of the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 50 km from Tenerife North Airport and 67 km from Tenerife South Airport. The town itself nestles below a 500m+ (1500 ft) cliff. The city of Garachico with its port was founded by a Jewish Genoan banker Cristóbal de Ponte after the conquest of Tenerife in 1496. On 5 May 1706, the eruption originating from the northwest rift zone of the Trevejo volcano was a major event in the town's history. Before then, Garachico was an important port exporting Malmsey wine and other local produce. However, a several-week-long eruption poured lava into the old bay and effectively destroyed the town's livelihood. The town itself was partially destroyed. (Contrary to the 'Tourist trade' myth, which will tell you that the town was completely destroyed, except for the church where the townfolk took refuge.) Garachico has always taken care of its environment and protected the most diverse cultural manifestations. For all these reasons, the Spanish government awarded the town the Gold Medal of Fine Arts, which was presented in 1980 by the King.[1]
Garachico’s daily pulse is set by the tide and the modest harbour that still serves the island’s traditional fishermen. Early mornings see small wooden luggers pulling in freshly caught Bogue and tuna, a sight best savoured from the low wall of the Plaza de la Constitución with a café con leche in hand. The market stalls, though modest, offer a glimpse of the island’s marine bounty, from flaky espada to locally smoked bonito. Visitors can join a fisherman for a short outing; the experience is usually informal, a few oars, a short trip to the nearby reef, and a chance to learn the local method of using the wind and currents. It’s a window onto a livelihood that predates tourism and remains essential to the town’s identity.
The lava fields that scarred Garachico in 1706 have become a natural promenade. Follow the marked trail that winds through black rock formations, where the old port’s basalt walls jut out of the sea like sea‑filled sculptures. Along the way, interpretative signs explain how the eruption reshaped the coastline, creating the famous natural swimming pools of El Caletón. The walk is gentle enough for most, but the real reward is the perspective it offers: you can contrast the town’s neatly preserved colonial architecture with the raw, recent geology, feeling the paradox of a settlement that rebuilt itself on the edge of molten history.
While most visitors arrive for the summer sun, Garachico’s calendar holds quieter, culturally rich moments. In late January the town celebrates the feast of San Roque, featuring a procession that winds through the narrow lanes, accompanied by local brass bands and a traditional “juego de bolas” (ball game) played by children in the square. The event offers a chance to see residents in their Sunday best, sharing homemade almond sweets known as “turrones”. Unlike the louder carnival scenes elsewhere on Tenerife, this festival retains a neighbourly tone, allowing travellers to engage directly with families and to understand how religious traditions intertwine with the island’s maritime rhythm.
